Gaseous fuels are “alternative” fuels, and can be used by traditional vehicle engines after a relatively simple set of modifications. The general use of gas-fuelled vehicles is justified on economic grounds. In Hungary, the legal regulations covering the conversion of motor vehicles to gaseous fuel use were established in the early 1990s.
High standard gas systems can easily be integrated into modern car electronic and fuel supply systems. Gas-fuelled vehicles now have almost the same performance and operating specifications as traditionally fuelled vehicles. The power of modified cars with traditional carburetor systems is reduced by 10-15 % when in “gas mode”, and that of converted injection system vehicles by approximately 6 %.
The use of LPG as a motor fuel represents a step forward in the reduction of environmental pollution by motor vehicles. Hazardous emissions from gas-fuelled cars are much lower than those from traditional fuels.
The technical standards of converted cars meet EU specifications. Every part of the gas supply system is subject to manufacturing and import licensing requirements and complies with UN Specification EGB67.
